General solar and battery questions
How much could solar save me?
Savings depend on roof orientation, shading, system size, your electricity use, tariff and how much generation you use on site. We provide property-specific assumptions rather than advertising one saving figure for every home.
Do solar panels work in Glasgow weather?
Yes. Solar PV generates electricity from daylight, not only direct sunshine. Output changes through the year, so the design should use location, orientation and shading data rather than a UK-wide headline figure.
Do I need planning permission in Scotland?
Many domestic roof installations fall within permitted development rights, but restrictions and consent requirements can apply to listed buildings, conservation areas, flats, ground-mounted systems and unusual designs. The property should be checked before work is agreed.
Can I be paid for exported solar electricity?
The Smart Export Guarantee requires participating electricity suppliers to offer tariffs for eligible small-scale generation. Your supplier will set its own tariff and application requirements, and an MCS certificate is commonly required for domestic systems.
Is FLO Solar MCS certified?
Yes. FLO Solar is operated by FLO Renewables Scotland Ltd, an MCS-certified installer through NAPIT under certification number NAP-68987.
Can a battery be added to existing solar panels?
Often, yes. The existing inverter, metering, electrical installation, available space and intended operating mode need to be checked before choosing an AC-coupled or DC-coupled solution.
Is battery storage useful without solar panels?
It can be where a suitable time-of-use tariff lets the battery charge at lower-cost periods and support the property during higher-cost periods. The financial case depends on your consumption and tariff.
Is VAT currently reduced on domestic solar and batteries?
Eligible installations of qualifying energy-saving materials in Great Britain are currently zero-rated until 31 March 2027. Eligibility depends on the installation and current tax rules, so the VAT treatment should be confirmed in your quotation.

Solar panel installation
Explore the serviceDo solar panels generate electricity in cloudy Glasgow weather?
Yes. Solar PV generates from daylight, although output varies with season, roof orientation and shading. The proposal should show property-specific annual generation assumptions rather than relying on a general headline.
Will I need planning permission?
Many domestic installations are permitted development in Scotland, but listed buildings, conservation areas, flats, ground-mounted arrays and unusual designs need individual checks. We identify relevant constraints during assessment.
Can I receive export payments?
Eligible systems can apply to an electricity supplier offering a Smart Export Guarantee tariff. Suppliers set their own rates and evidence requirements; an MCS certificate is commonly required for domestic installations.

Solar battery storage
Explore the serviceCan I add a battery to solar panels fitted by someone else?
Often, yes. We need to identify the existing inverter and protection arrangements before recommending whether an AC-coupled retrofit or other configuration is appropriate.
Can a battery work without solar panels?
Yes. A standalone battery can be charged from the grid and may suit a time-of-use tariff. Its value depends on the tariff, usable capacity, round-trip efficiency and your peak-period electricity use.
Will a home battery run everything during a power cut?
Only if the system includes suitable backup capability and circuits. Standard grid-connected batteries do not automatically provide whole-home backup, so this requirement must be designed in from the start.

Solar-aware EV chargers
Explore the serviceCan an EV charger use only surplus solar?
Compatible chargers can follow measured export and vary their charging rate, subject to the charger's minimum power and the available solar surplus. We check equipment compatibility as part of the design.
Will my electrical supply support an EV charger?
That depends on the incoming supply, existing loads and network requirements. The assessment determines whether load management or further work is needed.
Can you install a charger without off-street parking?
A safe, authorised cable route to a dedicated parking space is normally required. Flats, communal land and cross-pavement routes need additional permissions and may not be suitable.
Site-specific proposal
Commercial solar
Explore the serviceHow is commercial solar payback calculated?
It depends on installed cost, generation, the proportion used on site, avoided import prices, export income, maintenance and financing. We show the assumptions rather than presenting one payback period for every building.
Does the roof need a structural survey?
The building and proposed mounting system need an appropriate structural assessment. The required level of investigation depends on the roof type, records, condition and system design.
Will the installation disrupt operations?
Programme, access, isolations and working areas are planned with the site team. The practical approach depends on the building and its operating requirements.
Diagnosis before replacement
Solar servicing and repairs
Explore the serviceCan you repair a system installed by a company that has closed?
Yes. Any available MCS documents, inverter details and monitoring records help us identify the system before arranging appropriate testing.
How can I tell whether my panels are underperforming?
Compare similar months and weather conditions, check for inverter warnings and look for a sustained change. Send us the system size, postcode and monitoring screenshots if you are unsure whether a visit is justified.
Do solar panels need routine cleaning?
Not every array does. Cleaning is more relevant where bird fouling, nearby trees, lichen or a shallow pitch prevents normal rainfall from clearing deposits.
Bespoke system design
Off-grid and hybrid solar
Explore the serviceCan a Scottish property run entirely off grid?
It can be technically possible, but winter demand and consecutive low-generation days make storage and backup design critical. We assess the loads before saying whether it is practical.
Can a battery support a weak grid connection?
A suitable hybrid system may limit grid import while the battery supports short demand peaks. The connection, loads and equipment controls must be assessed together.
Can the system include automatic generator start?
Compatible systems can include controlled generator integration. The start conditions, changeover, fuel strategy, servicing and manual override must all be designed safely.
