A design should fit the roof—not fight it
Usable roof area, shading, rooflights and safe access all shape the final layout.
The export tariff is separate from the solar system
The Smart Export Guarantee requires participating suppliers to offer an export tariff to eligible small-scale generators, but suppliers set their own rates and conditions. The best option can depend on your import tariff, meter and willingness to use a particular supplier.
Published rates can change. Check current supplier terms directly rather than relying on a quotation prepared months earlier.
Evidence and metering matter
Applications commonly require evidence of an eligible installation and export-capable metering. Keep the MCS certificate, commissioning information and grid paperwork supplied at handover.
Some tariffs use measured export while older assumptions about deemed export may not apply. The supplier confirms the meter and evidence it accepts.
Model self-use and export separately
A savings estimate should not value every generated unit at the household import rate. Electricity used on site and electricity exported usually have different values, so the model should state both assumptions clearly.
Common questions
- Is an export tariff automatic after installation?
- No. The customer normally applies to an eligible supplier and provides the requested installation and metering evidence.
- Do I have to use the same supplier for import and export?
- Not always. Supplier terms differ, so confirm current eligibility, rates and any linked-tariff requirements before applying.
